The skull n Bones has many different meanings and origins. It was found in the old days, And I mean biblical times on churches to ward off demons also on crucifixes under the feet of Jesus to symbolize Adam at least that is the what it is thought. I have seen one of these crucifixes in a museum with my own eyes. Very cool sight I must say. And the pirate meaning behind it simply means "death is coming" as well as a way to identify the captain of that ship. And yes it is a warning of something bad usually meaning death, like on a poison bottle, but that's not where it truly came from. I have a Skull and bones tattoo. Now, for me it means all of these things. Life, death, and fear! My philosophy behind getting it was just that! No I'm not a pirate of any sort!! I am a man that fought with cancer, watched his mother die from it and lost his sister to a gunshot in the face as well as many other hardships. I have faced all of those things and came out alive and stronger every time. So my tattoo is a reminder that I should live life everyday because death is coming, and if you sit long enough in it's presence you can grow to understand and not fear it nearly as much! But that's my meaning anyway!

A representation of a human skull above two long crossed bones, a symbol of death once used by pirates and now used as a warning label on poisons. It was used to terrorize victims into surrendering without a struggle. The earliest such flags were plain red or black sheets - red symbolizing blood and battle, black for death. Later captains added emblems: hearts dripping blood, fiery balls, hourglasses, cutlasses, skeletons, etc. Around 1718, Captain Richard Worley flew a black flag with a white death's-head and crossed femurs, a symbol of death dating to medieval times. By about 1730 this design had caught on among English, French, and Spanish pirates in the West Indies and was called the "Jolly Roger" or "Old Roger."
