Weapons and armor for individuals were heavily dependant on smiths to make high quality steel. They worked with metals daily as their job and they made swords as well as just about anything metal that the people would need
There were a number of different kinds of smiths, but they all had one thing in common, which was that they worked with metals. A couple of examples might make this clear.
A blacksmith worked primarily with iron. He might make shoes for horses, and put them on. He would be the person who made farm tools. In times of urgent need, he would make weapons.
A silver smith worked with silver. He made silverware, which would include cups, spoons, and so on, for the table. He would also make candle holders, and other things for the homes of wealthy people.
A gold smith made mostly jewelry.
An arrow smith made arrow heads.
A locksmith made and repaired locks and keys.
And so on.

The Middle English word smith refers to a blacksmith, an ironworker, a farrier; he was a man who used a furnace called a forge to heat and shape iron. The end product could be nails, hinges, tools, horseshoes, tyres for cartwheels and many other iron items.
A goldsmith did the same kind of work in gold, a silversmith worked in silver and a bronzesmith worked in various copper alloys including bronze.
A smith's forge had to be maintained at a very high temperature in order to soften the iron - a boy would be employed to work bellows at the rear of the furnace. In order to create top-quality blades the smith would add charcoal to the forge - the carbon in the charcoal turned ordinary iron into mild steel.
Throughout the medieval period, metal items of all kinds were very expensive, so most ordinary people only had access to knives (for preparing food and for eating), buckles for belts and certain tools such as sickles and scythes.
he made the chain mail and all the weapons, he also fixed weapons and did it all on an anvil which back then was the top of the range blacksmith tool.
