an area of land with a population of over 30,000 people can ask to become a state . then it is voted on by everybody (president, house of reps, ect.). If 2/3 of all the separate branches except it as a state it is one.

The U.S. [United states] is better know as the States because there are multiple States in America that united together under one elected leader... FYI: the word STATES is in the name of the country and simply people use the most definitive word to describe said country ...

They were all ready 13 colonies so they just changed from colonies to states. The bountries more or less stayed the same with a few exceptions and some discussion between them.
