Suppressive fires from mortars allow patrols to?

Your question is somewhat contradictory. "Suppressive fire" usually refers to any weapons used to force the enemy take cover and prevent/interrupt return fire so your own forces can advance. Suppressive fire can be a number of riflemen, automatic weapons, mortars, and even (heavy) artillery. A patrol is usually a small, mobile force intended to probe an area to establish enemy strength, and any useful intelligence such as number and type of weapons, fortified positions, logistics points, etc. This usually precedes a large-scale attack allowing planners to use the intelligence gathered to pinpoint strong points for artillery/air support targeting, and weak points to exploit during the attack. A patrol can be as simple as a squad of infantry, or may be a small force of light mechanized troops. A large patrol might carry it's own light mortars which can be used for suppressive fire in order to extract it's own soldiers from a crossfire situation, for example.

What does a support gunner do in squad?

In the US military, you'd probably be referring to a squad's Automatic Rifleman, who carries the M249 SAW. Each fire team in an infantry squad has one, and their role is suppressive and supporting fire, particularly to lay down covering fire while the other fire team bounds, flanks around, or moves otherwise.

Where are grenade launchers used and for what purpose?

Generally, they're used in situations where indirect fire becomes necessary, but calling in mortars or heavy artillery is not an option, is not available, or is impractical. The grenade launcher bridges the gap between hand grenades and mortars. They can use for a number of purposes, and they can fire several different types of rounds, including fragmentation (kill/wound an enemy, inflict damage on soft targets), smoke (visibility suppression), flares (illumination and signaling), shot pellets and flechettes (anti-personnel), as well as types with dual military/law enforcement use, such as less lethal projectiles and CS tear gas (crowd control and enforcement). Additionally, some types may be used for suppressive fire (automatic grenade launchers). They can be carried by individuals (M203, AG36, GP-25/30, M79, Milkor MGL), and they can be vehicle or tripod mounted (Mk. 19 Mod. 0, HK GMG, Vektor Y3, AGS-17, etc.) and these can be mounted on wheeled vehicles, ships, or helicopters.

How small can machine guns get?

Depends on you're using the definition of machine gun as an often crew served weapons designed to deliver suppressive fire, or the BATFE definition, in which all full auto weapons are designated as machine guns. The Czechs in the runup the Second World War had a 9mm submachinegun with a bipod for use in the suppressive fire role. That would probably have been the smallest under the first definition. By the BATFE legal definition (where any full auto is considered a machine gun), the smallest semi auto handguns, if they underwent a conversion, could take this distinction.

Which is better a bazooka or a minigun?

Different weapons for different purposes. The bazooka was designed for use against armoured vehicles, while the Minigun was designed to provide heavy levels of suppressive fire. One would be virtually useless in trying to fill the role of the other.

What replaced catapults in the 14th and 15th centuries?

Cannon and mortars. Catapults, trebuchets and ballistae were large, cumbersome, and were limited in how forceful the the projectile could be. Cannon balls powered by gunpowder were't so limited. Cannon, mortars and other artillery were more easily transportable, could fire a couple of times per minute, and cannonballs could knock down the stone walls of most castles.
