A Torre de Belém could be seen to symbolise the Age of the Discoveries (A Época dos Descrobimentos) as it was originally built to watch over the incoming and outgoing ships, as they were launched to explore the world (via Sagres). When it was built it was further out into the Tagus river than today, but due to urbanisation and the new marinas etc., the Torre is butting against the riverbank.
