I am not sure what specifically you are asking here but the Bible does not teach self denial for the sake of of it. The Bible states that we are to follow Christ's teachings and His desires for us. If we do this faithfully we will eventually be asked to deny ourselves certain things. For example, Christ taught that lusting after a women you are not married to is a sin. If we are to follow his teaching we must deny our "flesh" and no longer do this. This is the kind of self denial that the Bible teaches. It teaches us to reject the things that God disapproves of, if we do these things we end up denying ourselves things that "worldly" people like to do.

Keep in mind though that the Bible does not teach us to deny ourselves everything. The New Testament teaches us that we are saved by Gods undeserved favor and that nothing we can ever do will earn us a spot in heaven. We must accept Christ's forgiveness. Many people have done crazy and foolish things in an effort to gain favor with God. I read of one saint who refused to sit down for 30 years so that he would suffer something for Christ. That is silly and unbiblical. There will be times that Christ will ask us to make sacrifices, but as I mentioned before, we should not try to deny ourselves anything just for the sake of denying ourselves. The Bible teaches us to enjoy life and to seek joy. A pastor friend of mine, who is the most Godly and righteous person I know, likes to say that christians should celebrate more than anybody. We are not meant to live in caves and eat moldy bread. We should celebrate our redemption through Christ, and our blessings. We should also respect and be obedient to God in our actions. The Pilgrims were the most devout christian people on earth, but the first Thanksgiving was a weeklong non-stop party. They celebrated with integrity, however.

When we accept Christ as our redeemer and savior, the Bible states that we are given strength through the Holy Spirit to overcome the sinful things in our lives. Some people have been known to get rid of a heroine addiction overnight... literally. The Bible says that the Holy Spirit is a "deposit" on our souls that states we belong to God and will inherit his kindom (heaven). It is extremely, extremely rare for someone to get rid of an addiction by themselves. But God promises to guide us into truth and give us strength to overcome our struggles if we accept Christ as our Lord and Savior.

How can one overcome hopelessness?

If one is feeling hopeless it may be a sign of depression, in which case one can go to the doctor to be diagnosed with depression and possibly prescribed with an anti-depressant to help one overcome their feeling of hopelessness. Another way of overcoming hopelessness is by determining the root of the emotion and dealing with that. Anthony Scioli and Henry Biller, in their book "Hope in the Age of Anxiety," postulate that there are nine forms of hopelessness and each form has its own methods of being overcome.

How can you get out of denial?

Denial is a multifaceted situation that sounds easier to overcome than it actually is -- by a long shot. It is not usually something that we can work through on our own, because we have too much emotional turmoil to be able to consider it clearly. We suggest either a self-help group like Codependents Anonymous, or a counselor who is familiar with relationship problems. Avoid friends and clergy. They tend to have their own agendas that will not necessarily correspond with what is best for you, although they would most likely mean well.
