The Bible indicates that LOVE for God and one's neighbor is a vital part of Christianity and that we should love our neighbors as ourselves(Matthew 22:37-40), so clearly we need to have a measure of self-respect to accomplish this successfully, along with modesty (a knowledge of our own limitations)(Romans 12:3)

Our bodies, minds and figurative hearts are gifts from God and should be appreciated and cared for(Romans 12:1) (1 Timothy 4:8). "Looking after ourselves" would involve training our thinking(Ephesians 4:17-25), feeding our bodies on good things, working hard and keeping our lives under control for our own benefit, but especially for our relationship with God. (Ecclesiastes 11:9-10)(Deuteronomy 8:6-14) (Ephesians 4:26-28)

We are told at Proverbs 4:20-27 that ABOVE ALL ELSE we should 'safeguard our 'figurative' heart, for out of IT is the source of life'. Our 'heart' ( the seat of motivation) is where everything we allow ourselves to experience, ends up. It will often, in the end, motivate us to act on what we've lived. It's this quality that encourages marketing companies to spend millions on ads that pour desires into our eyes, ears and mind, that end up motivating US to buy, buy, buy. (Ephesians 6:13-18) tells us to be busy with spiritual things, So, to care for ourselves would mean to be careful what we PUT into our mind, heart and body, because we are God's creation.(Psalm 139:14)

How many times does the bible say for us to help ourselves?

None, on the contrary the Bible tell us that we are by nature helpless, "without strength" (Romans 5:6), "dead in sins" (Ephesians 2:1, 5; Colossians 2:13) and "slaves of sin" (John 8:34; Romans 6:20) And that is why we need to be saved (Acts 4:12) If we could help ourselves, then Christ would have died for nothing, Christianity and the Bible would have no purpose either.

It is simply not in the Bible. Some say it is in 'Pilgrim's Progress' by John Bunyon while others attributed to a playright Charles Macklin credit for it.
