We see that God left the pagan nations behind because Israel was not faithful in driving them out. Now it was within the power of God to eliminate those pagan nations without any help from Israel, but God allowed the pagan nations to remain so they could test Israel, so that the generations of the children of Israel might be taught to know war. After awhile the children of Israel took the pagans daughters and made them their wives and like wise the pagans did the same. By doing this the people did evil in the sight of God. So God raised up Othniel to deliver the children of Israel after they had cried out to him. The children of Israel continued to do evil 3 more times and each time they cried out and the Lord sent someone to deliver each time (Ehud, Shamgar, and Deborah).

The Book of Judges gives us some history between the time of Joshua and the first King of Israel. Probably more important it tells us that man can not rule himself without God and God appointed rulers. The theme that runs through the book is, " In those days there was no king in Israel, everyone did what was right in his own eyes."

Can you imagine what would happen today if we did not have rulers? or even a God like Jesus Christ to keep the evil down?

Israel would sin and another nation would came in a persecute them, then the Israelites would call out to God and He would raise up a leader (Judge) who would deliver them from sin for a while. After the judge died, Israel would sin again and the whole process would start over. This cycle repeated itself for about 400 years.

This chapter relates the first rise of idolatry in Israel after the death of Joshua. We are told how Micah an Ephraimite provided himself,

1. With an image for his god (Judges 17:1-6).

2. With a Levite, for his priest (Judges 17:7-13).

A key verse is Judges 17:6 In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did what was right in his own eyes.
