The "CS" stands for Creative Suite, which Adobe started after the merger with Macromedia in 2007. It was intended to merge the key Adobe and Macromedia programs into a single suite version (for Print, Electronic, and Video/Film media).
The original version was just Adobe CS; as the programs have evolved over the years, Adobe has released newer suite versions, the latest being CS6.
