you is not a french word. The English word 'you' may be translated either 'tu' or 'vous' in French. 'Tu' is familiar AND singular. 'Vous' is used in more formal relationships OR as the plural you.

"Tu" if you talk about one person or "Vous" if you talk about many persons.

Addendum:

Vous is also used as the polite form of "you" - to someone older, whom you don't know personally, or in a higher social position.
