Church law requires that a Crucifix (NOT a simple cross, but a cross with a representation of Our Blessed Lord on it) is required at the celebration of every Mass. The Mass is not a symbol but the re-presentation of Our Blessed Lord's sacrifice of Himself on Calvary, of which the Crucifix IS a symbol.

The Holy Cross represents the cross that Jesus died on. God sent His Son Jesus to the earth to die for our sins so we could be saved.
