The flag for the state of Iowa shows a brown and white hawk. The hawk is carrying a snake in its talons and shows the bird in flight. On the left is a blue vertical stripe. The middle is white. On the right is a red vertical stripe.
The flag consists of three vertical stripes: the blue stripe stands for loyalty, justice and truth; the white stripe for purity; and the red stripe for courage. On the white center an eagle carries streamers in its beak which are inscribed with the state's motto: "Our liberties we prize and our rights we will maintain." The name "IOWA" is in red below the streamers.

It depends on what kind of map.
From outer space it looks flat and sort of green in the summer, brown and white in the winter. Down at ground level, much of Iowa is rolling hills, definitely not flat, but there are no high mountains. Northeast Iowa has cliffs and deep valleys, even canyons. The river valleys have woods along the water, but most of the uplands were prairie and are now corn and soybean fields. There are no really big cities, but lots of small ones, and it seems that every city with a population over 5000 has a small college. 120 years ago, south central Iowa was coal country, but the last mine closed 40 years ago. Wind power provides a large fraction of the state's electric supply (over 30 percent) so you see windmills dotting the horizon in much of northern and western Iowa.
