Well it is a honorific term that you put at the end of someone's name. "Sama" is mainly used in anime. No one really uses it unless you want to. Sama is used like for really really REALLY important like royalty or presidents. For example if there is a king named George you would call him George-Sama. I hope I helped.

-sama shows great respect for someone, can be used either for someone of greater status than yourself or someone whom you greatly respect. Can also be used to arrogently (or ironicly) reffer to yourself. It might mean "lord" for a man and "lady" for a woman. For example, you could address a man as "Ichiya-sama" : "Lord Ichiya," and a woman as "Mickey-sama" : "Lady Mickey."

It doesn't have an equivalent in English, it is used to emphasize respect and show significant politeness towards the person whose name 'sama' is used with. In today's Japanese, it is rarely used, you might only hear it after name of an emperor or anyone/anything regarded with great respect. [e.g. 'otentou sama' is a very respectful way to address 'the sun' considered as a heavenly object in Japanese folklore.]

There are other usages where it is used in expressions of gratitude, greetings and such, which also adds a sense of respect to them [e.g. 'gochisou sama' = 'thanks for the food/it was a great feast'.]
