The centre of the cross has the royal arms of Scotland, "a gold shield with a red lion rampant surrounded by a royal double tressure (a double border decorated with fleurs de lis)".
The royal arms do not appear on Scotland's flag - they were added to Nova Scotia's to distinguish the flag from the Naval Ensign of Russia which is also a blue cross on a white field.

∙ 11y agoThere is a crowned unicorn (representing the British monarchy) and a Micmac indian (representing the indigenous people) holding a shield with a blue diagonal cross on a white background, which is the Scottish flag with the colours reversed, with a smaller shield in the centre representing the Royal Arms of Scotland (a red lion on a gold field, surrounded with fleur-de-lys).
The main figures stand on grass with Mayflowers (official flower of NS) and Thistles (Scotland again). Above the shield are two clasped hands, one bare and the other wearing armour. The hands hold a thistle (Scotland) and a laurel (peace).
At the top is a banner with the motto: Munit haec et altera vincit: One defends and the other conquers.

∙ 9y agoNova Scotia's flag is based on the coat of arms and the royal arms of Scotland. The reverse color cross of St Andrew on the flag is there to provide a visual contrast for the shield.
