During the revolution, the French tore down the statue and renamed the Place de la Concorde to Place de la Revolution. Facing the former statue of Louis XV, the French also placed a guillotine on the Place de la Revolution and thousands of people died there during the revolution. Nowadays it is called the Place de la Concorde and on the spot where the guillotine used to be, there is now an obelisk (the Obelix de Luxor). It was placed there in 1836.
