Well, when the Soviet Union fell apart, the government gave Russian citizens shares for the manufactures in order for the people to have something of value. However, these shares did not worth anything in the beginning when the economy was redeveloping after the collapse of the soviet union. People who were always governed did not realize the value of shares and sold it for nothing. For example, if you could buy a car with the money during USSR, you could only buy a dirty old shoe for that money in new Russia. Since the money were worthless, people decided to sell their stocks to get some food at least. When all the stocks were bought up by the bad guys, stock value went up. Now the bad guys owned all the manufactures. Since they did not want the people to realize what happend, new stockholders sold all the equipment and all the valuable metals abroad for cheap. Not only Russian people lost their shares, they have lost a place to work and produce for themeselves. Now, this was the story about bad businesman. However, there were people who came to the factory, shot the head of the factory and took over that way. So the Mafia used mental and physical strength to rob the people.
Some places were so violent that the gangs shot each other with a fast pace. Gang leaders soemtimes would go out to the country side and find poor young guys without any perspectives in life. Mafia would "hire" 'em and place in an appartment complex with several other guys alike. Most people like that did not last long. No longer then a month I believe. After each memeber's death, the gang would show respect and honor through a gorgeous funeral procedure. Afterwards they would go out and hire new interns.
If a combat member got lucky and stayed alive long enough, he would start to drive a Mercedes or a BMW with an AK-47 in the trunk and wear Adidas sport suit and with a thick gold chain.
The more liberal economic and political environments allowed the mafia to flourish more openly and widely.
