A:BC stands for "Before Christ" and refers to the period of history before the birth of Jesus Christ.

There is an error in the AD dating system which was made by a monk, Dionisius the Short, and identified by St Bede the Venerable. It is also important to note that BC was not used originally with AD the distinction was between the years after the incarnation and everything else. We currently make the distinction in reverse we take as read the AD in current dates but use the BC.
