Dostoyevski wants to tell the reader that people have forgotten what the actual meaning of Christmas was. Christmas is supposed to make you remember the memories of family and enjoy your time with them. but some kids are born without a family, so they do not get this experience. not everybody gets the same joy of christmas as we do(most of us). in the end, he is shown the cruelty of the world in his drea after he freezes to his death.even though he made the story up, he says in the story it could be very real.
