The Bible has a lot to say about stealing.

(1). One of the 10 commandments is not to steal:-

Exo 20:15 Thou shalt not steal.

(Repeated in Deu 5:19)

(2).A thief had to pay restitution of at least double the value of what he had stolen:-

Exo 22:1 "If a man steals an ox or a sheep and kills it or sells it, he must pay back five head of cattle for the ox, and four sheep for the one sheep.

Exo 22:4 If the stolen item should in fact be found alive in his possession, whether it be an ox or a donkey or a sheep, he must pay back double.

Exo 22:7 "If a man gives his neighbor money or articles for safekeeping, and it is stolen from the man's house, if the thief is caught, he must repay double.

Exo 22:9 In all cases of illegal possessions, whether for an ox, a donkey, a sheep, a garment, or any kind of lost item, about which someone says 'This belongs to me,' the matter of the two of them will come before the judges, and the one whom the judges declare guilty must repay double to his neighbor.

(3). Restitution also had to be made if it was accidental and not deliberate:-

Exo 22:5 "If a man grazes his livestock in a field or a vineyard, and he lets the livestock loose and they graze in the field of another man, he must make restitution from the best of his own field and the best of his own vineyard.

Exo 22:6 "If a fire breaks out and spreads to thorn bushes, so that stacked grain or standing grain or the whole fieldis consumed, the one who started the fire must surely make restitution.

(5). If he couldn't make restitution he was to be sold :-

Exo 22:3 ... A thief must surely make full restitution; if he has nothing, then he will be sold for his theft.

(6).There was no penalty if a thief was caught breaking in at night and was killed:-

Exo 22:2 "If a thief is caught breaking in and is struck so that he dies, there will be no blood guilt for him.

(7). However, following on directly from the previous verse, if the thief was killed during daylight the killer was guilty of murder:-

Exo 22:3 If the sun has risen on him, then there is blood guilt for him. ...

(8). People were to deal honestly with one another.

Lev 19:11 " 'You must not steal, you must not tell lies, and you must not deal falsely with your fellow citizen.

Jer 23:30 So I, the LORD, affirm that I am opposed to those prophets who steal messages from one another that they claim are from me.

Jer 7:9 You steal. You murder. You commit adultery. You lie when you swear on oath. You sacrifice to the god Baal. You pay allegiance to other gods whom you have not previously known.

Deut 25:16 For anyone who acts dishonestly in these ways is abhorrent to the LORD your God.

(9). People were not to use different weights when they were buying compared with when they were selling:-

Deu 25:13, 15-6 NET You must not have in your bag different stone weights, a heavy and a light one. ..[v. 14].You must have an accurate and correct stone weight and an accurate and correct measuring container,..

(10). ALL these rules were still applicable in the New Testament, in intent if not in actual practice.

Mat 19:18 "Which ones?" he asked. Jesus replied, "Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony,

Mat 5:17-20 NET "Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have not come to abolish these things but to fulfill them. [v. 18] I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth pass away not the smallest letter or stroke of a letter will pass from the law until everything takes place. [v. 19] So anyone who breaks one of the least of these commands and teaches others to do so will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever obeys them and teaches others to do so will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. [v. 20] For I tell you, unless your righteousness goes beyond that of the experts in the law and the Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

(11). The disciples' treasurer was Judas who stole from the money-bag they had for food etc:-

Joh 12:6 (Now Judas said this not because he was concerned about the poor, but because he was a thief. As keeper of the money box, he used to steal what was put into it.)

(12). Thieves were to work rather than steal so they could buy food to give to those who didn't have any:-

Eph 4:28 The one who steals must steal no longer; rather he must labor, doing good with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with the one who has need.

(13). The poor were, understandidly, more likely to steal (eg for food) but this still did not make it excusable:-

Pro 30:8-9 NET Remove falsehood and lies far from me;

do not give me poverty or riches,

feed me with my allotted portion of bread,

[v. 9] ... lest I become poor and steal

and demean the name of my God.

1 Corinthians 5:9 In my letter I wrote YOU to quit mixing in company with fornicators, 10 not [meaning] entirely with the fornicators of this world or the greedy persons and extortioners or idolaters. Otherwise, YOU would actually have to get out of the world. 11 But now I am writing YOU to quit mixing in company with anyone called a brother that is a fornicator or a greedy person or an idolater or a reviler or a drunkard or an extortioner, not even eating with such a man. 12 For what do I have to do with judging those outside? Do YOU not judge those inside, 13 while God judges those outside? "Remove the wicked [man] from among yourselves."

1 Corinthians 6:9 What! Do YOU not know that unrighteous persons will not inherit God's kingdom? Do not be misled. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men kept for unnatural purposes, nor men who lie with men, 10 nor thieves, nor greedy persons, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit God's kingdom. 11 And yet that is what some of YOU were. But YOU have been washed clean, but YOU have been sanctified, but YOU have been declared righteous in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ and with the spirit of our God

I Know theres the commandment; Thou shall not steal... Somebody who has stolen should repent, pray to God for forgiveness, give it back, apologise, and work with his hands:-

Exo 20:15 MKJV You shall not steal.

Luk 18:18-22 MKJV And a certain ruler asked Him, saying, "Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?" (19) And Jesus said to him, "Why do you call Me good? None is good except One, God. (20) You know the commandments: Do not commit adultery, do not kill, do not steal, do not bear false witness, honor your father and your mother." (21) And he said, "I have kept all these from my youth up. " (22) And when Jesus heard these things, He said to him, "Yet you lack one thing. Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you shall have treasure in Heaven. And come, follow Me. "

Eph 4:28 MKJV Let him who stole steal no more, but rather let him labor, working with his hands the thing which is good, so that he may have something to give to him who needs.

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

2 Timothy 3:16-17

The "stealing of blessing" that you refer to was the trick that Jacob played on Esau. Many people struggle to justify this event. After all, Jacob was later renamed Israel and was the father of that nation. The eventual descendant of Jacob was, of course, the Lord Jesus Christ.

To get some understanding of this event we must first consider that all men are sinners. Every man in the lineage of Christ Jesus was a sinner. All fail to come up to the glory of God. That is the reason that man-kind needs a savior.

Getting back to Jacob and Esau: Esau despised his birthright. He sold it to Jacob for a bowl of soup. This shows that Esau was carnally minded. He sought for fleshly sustenance, rather than turning to God to provide for his needs. Also, the spiritual picture here, is that Esau could not see past his flesh, his belly, to grasp the priceless value of his birthright, and for that reason, was unworthy to be the vessel of the great nation of Israel.

After that deal was done, Issac should have willingly given Jacob the blessing. After all, he had the promise that out of him would come a great nation through which would all the families of the Earth be blessed.

So as we look back through the history of Israel, and see the fulfillment of prophesy, and the eventual birth of the Messiah. And also, when we consider the gross evil that would come out of the nation of Edom, we can see that the blessing of Jacob was the will of God. We also see that in spite of the folly and treachery of sinful men, the will of God was done on Earth.

As to the sale of Esau's birthright; there is a lesson there for those who love the Lord. If we sacrifice the treasure that God has bestowed on us for the comfort of the flesh, we forfeit the first blessing, and settle for the lesser blessing. If we live in the spirit, our spiritual lineage is blessed, if we live after the flesh, our spiritual lineage is lost. How tragic it is for believing parents to lose their children to Satan.

"Do not steal." (Ex.20:15 NLT New Living Translation)

"Anyone who takes another person's life must be put to death." (Lev.24:17 NLT)

"Anyone who injures another person must be dealt with according to the injury inflicted - fracture for fracture, eye for eye, tooth for tooth [bullet wound for bullet wound]. Whatever anyone does to hurt another person must be paid back in kind... These same regulations apply to Israelites by birth and foreigners who live among you. I, the Lord AM your God." (verses 19-22)

"Excuses might be found for a thief who steals because he is starving. But if he is caught, he will be fined seven times as much as he stole, even if it means selling everything in his house to pay it back." (Prov.6:30-31 NLT)
