What does the big 2 mean in CO 2?

When properly typeset, "CO2" is written not with a big two but with a small one lowered slightly from the baseline of the letters, and the 2 means there are two oxygen atoms in the molecule.

Written the way you have it "CO 2" and talking about a "big 2", I assume that you mean a 2 approximately the same size as the letters. In that case it means "2 of whatever the entire following thing is."
