The buffer is a small portion of the primary memory. The data item which is to be modified is first copied into the buffer memory. After applying changes, the data item is written back to the permanent storage.

In a chemical sense a buffer is a chemical that either accepts or donates ions so that the concentration of a solution remains the same through a range of influx.

In Biology:

A buffer resists or tries to stop pH change to help maintain homeostasis.

buffers are :

MgO or CaCO3.(H2CO3) (NaHCO3)

millions more

For example : Your blood pH is between 7.35 to 7.45 anything up and down will

cause acidosis( lower than 7.35) and alkalosis ( higher than 7.45).

So our body has Buffer system to maintain this blood pH balanced.

Another Answer:

In Chemistry

  1. any substance in a solution that tends to stabilize the hydrogen ion concentration by neutralizing any added acid or alkali
  2. Weak acids or bases that can react with strong acids or base to help prevent sharp, sudden changes in pH.

Another Answer:

One that buffs, especially a piece of soft leather or cloth used to shine or polish.

Another Answer:

A buffer is an aqueous solution that has a highly stable pH. If you add acid or base to a buffered solution, its pH will not change significantly. Similarly, adding water to a buffer or allowing water to evaporate will not change the pH of a buffer.

A buffer is an apparatus at the end of a railroad car, railroad track, etc., for absorbing shock during coupling, collisions, etc.

It is also any intermediate or intervening shield or device reducing the danger or interaction between two machines, chemicals, electronic components, etc.

In computers it is a storage device for temporarily holding data until the computer is ready to receive or process the data, as when a receiving unit has an operation speed lower than that of the unit feeding data to it.

Buffer can mean one of two things. Buffer related to the body means whoever is more in shape. If, for example, person 1 is more in shape than person 2, than person 1 is buffer than person 2. The other type of buffer is the message your computer might have when it says, for example, "Buffering. Please wait." That means your computer is loading, and needs time to act. The other type of buffer, and im assuming the one about which you ask is a chemical buffer. This is a substance that holds a solution at a set pH. If contains a week acid/base (depending on the pH you want) and it cojugate base/acid.

A buffer is a mixture of a weak acid and its conjugate base. (Ex. HC2H3O2 + NaCl --> Na+ + C2H3O2-). Acetic Acid is the weak acid and the Acetate Ion is its conjugate base.
