It says the Romans were afraid of them and wanted them to stay on their side of the wall.
Hadrian's Wall did not affect the Picts of Scotland much. It was built to protect Roman Britannia from their raids.
The building of Hadrian's wall merely says that the Picts and Scots or Caladonians as the Romans called them, were warlike raiders. Hadrian's wall was built to both protect the townspeople who lived in the area and to define Rome's border. The building of Hadrian's wall merely says that the Picts and Scots or Caladonians as the Romans called them, were warlike raiders. Hadrian's Wall was built by the Roman Emperor Hadrian to protect his Roman Army from the original inhabitants of Scotland, the Picts.
The Romans under Emperor Hadrian (117-138) built Hadrian's wall in northern England with the intent of keeping the Celtic Picts out of Roman-ruled England and Wales.
Not massively so. There were a number of small border skirmishes, but none of the setpiece battles that had populated Rome's conquest of England. Though Hadrian's Wall was theoretically a barrier against the Picts & the Scots, any determined invading force would not have been held for long by it. It was largely a signal, from Hadrian to the Scots, that the Empire had no interest in land north of the wall, and would not unduly molest them. Though we can't be sure exactly how this was received, it seems to have worked, for the Scottish tribes never really attempted to threaten Roman Britain in a significant way. jasonwire@priest.com
