How can a coil of wire pick up a nail?

When a wire has an electric current run through it it produces a magnetic feild. A coil of wire (also called a selonoid) produces a strong magnetic feild perpindicular to the turns of wire when a current is run through it. This is also known as electric magnet. Its also worthy to note that speakers work based off of this concept

Why is current produced in a coil if it is placed near other coil containg electricity?

When the current in a nearby coil changes, the magnetic flux associated with it changes and an induced emf is produced in the other coil.Hence, induced current is produced.

What is the science behind metal detectors?

Metal detectors use one of three technologies. Either very low frequency, pulse induction, and Beat-free oscillation. Metal detectors work by creating an electromagnetic feild. This is done by running current through a coil at the head of the metal detector (the part you point at the ground). When there is metal, the changes in the magnetic feild are picked up by a second receiver coil.

Why will one soft iron core in a coil heat up while another similar core with same coil and current not heat up. Could this problem be due to the AC frequency?

Assuming the coils have the same numbers of turns of wire ( and hence should produce the same instenity of magnetic feild ) the coil that heats up may have a higher magnetic reluctance, hence dissapates more of the magnetic energy as heat. Examine the cores closely , laminated cores ( one made of plates ) tend to have a lower magnetic reluctance.

Is the magnetic field of earth stronger near the middle of Earth or at the bottom of Earth?

the magneti feild of earth is stronger near the bottom of the earth beacause the earth s like a magnet and in a magnet the two poles are always magneticaly stronger than in the middle.
