DC as written that way would only mean double crochet in crochet .. only thing I can think of it is a knit pattern and in the finishing they tell you to dc around meaning to double crochet around which does happen too or somewhere in the knit pattern they want you to double crochet .. last idea someone made a typo and they meant to say dec = decrease ..
Its not possible to work around a crochet space because a space has nothing in it. However it is possible to work around a crochet stitch such as the post of the actual crochet stitch. You can work a crochet slip stitch over the top of crochet chains and stitches to get to another place in your crochet piece. You can also work crochet stitches around the post of a stitch. The term working around the space does not make any sense and is not good language for describing written instructions.
In crochet, the abbreviation, sk chs, is an instruction to skip (sk) chains (chs). In a pattern you might see it written: sk 3ch. Which would translate into: skip stitching into the next 3 chain stitches (you would then follow then next instructions to find out what to do then).
A quarter note.
