What does the dash wrench light mean in a 2002 Chevy Cavalier?

The maintenance manual for the car only says vehicle needs service, take it to a dealership. On my Cavalier the light came on when the car was put into gear and you can hear a series of clicks, then it runs fine. 20 starts later it quit while driving to work and had to be towed.
This light monitors what they call "sealed" systems, or systems the average owner wouldn't service. ( auto transmission does not have dip stick or filler cap, radiator does not have a cap or means to check fluid...) Certain systems on this model are designed to be dealer fix only. Mine turned out to be fuel pump, fuel filter, and the diagnosis to figure it out- $912.00.
