well lets start with knowing why DOT is before COM anyway!?the dot is a security control signal. it indicates that your computer isn't doing things on its own; your there on your own computer. Has anyone seen that when they log in to anything then some crazy looking letters show up and they tell you to write what letters you see? that's because they want to check that the computer hasn't logged you into something you do not want to be logged into. well this dot is standing for the same. everyone knows that computers cant type! so that is why they ask you to type in the letters you see. Also the dot stands there in that area so the search engine can see where your website ends. example (wikianswerscom) wikianswers.com

now what does COM mean!? com stands for. . . .commercial! because there is ORG which stands for government and EDU which stands for education and NET which stands for neterian.

It is just the last extensions type to express the country of website like Id for Indonesia and in for India or pk for Pakistan etc so logically ca for Canada... :) but as i was searching internet, that answered me that this can also be used with California... :)

Website Address is the URL (Uniform Resource Locator) that is mapped to an IP Address on DNS Servers & locates the Server where site is hosted. URL Name consists of protocol name, Hostname & Domain Name separated by dots.

Dot (Period) in Web address seperates the names representing different entities on the Network.
