un fleuve - a river
It's a little more specific than that.
The French have two words for river:
Riviere: a river that flows into another river.
Fleuve: a (usually larger) river that flows directly into a salt water sea or ocean.
"Fleuve" in French means "river" or "river that flows directly into the sea" as opposed to a "rivière" which is a smaller river or stream.
"un fleuve" (masc.) is a river in French, but a main river which runs into the sea or into the ocean. A river that runs into another one (and not directly into the sea) is called "une rivière" (fem.), a word that has the same root as the English 'river'.
"Fleuve" is pronounced as "fluhv" in French. Remember that the "eu" sound has a closed vowel sound similar to the English "u".

depends on the definition of the word RIVER. Most dictionaries include the word 'large' in this definition, so the answer would be 'yes'. French, interestingly, has two words, riviere and fleuve; a FLEUVE runs into the sea, whereas a RIVIERE runs into a fleuve. As any stream that flows into the sea is a fleuve, some of them are quite small.
