The A stands for Angel
Frank Sadliek created the first Deaths Head (the logo). It was then enlarged for patches by Ralph "Sonny" Barger who was the founder of the Oakland Chapter. This larger version of the logo was called the "Barger Larger" and it eventually became the standard logo for the group.
