An IP address is a number that identifies your computer and the network area it is a part of. Every device directly connected to the internet has a unique address. Home and office machines typically have IP addresses that reflect the hierarchy of the network they are on.

You can think of an IP address as being similar to a postal address. It describes where to send data so that it reaches it's destination.

IP addresses are assigned by the network and gives a source and destination to where the data sent and received will go. Imagine this is the same as the postal system for anywhere in the world. Without physical addresses, how would the company that you bought this item for know where to send it to you?

The IP address of a computer, or any other object in a network, is their identity and address on which you can communicate with them.

So when you for example want to send a message to an other computer in your network, you have to enter their IP Address as the target of your message.
