What does the large intestine store?

The large intestine contains the products from the small intestine that have not been absorbed as nutrients to the body. This includes undigested food, dead flora, bilirubin, some minerals, vitamins, and water. As these pass through the colon, the water, minerals, and vitamins are reabsorbed, leaving behind feces. The composition of feces is about 1/3 bilirubun from the dead red blood cells (this is what gives it its brown color), 1/3 dead bacteria from the intestinal flora, and 1/3 undigestible food, which is mostly plant fiber.

The stools gradually solidify as they move along into the descending colon.
