Dating fossils and artifacts are easy. Scientist can look and tell how old the fossils by how many layers is under it.
They studied fossils and applied the principle that old layers of rock are below young layers! -
In the geological column , scientists have learned that rocks are stacked in layers. The oldest fossils are located in the deepest layers, a vertical timeline.
depending on how deep the rock is in the ground tells scientists how old the rock is

I.which types of organisms were more common during various time periods.II.how species have evolved over time.III.the relative age of different species. there it is
Location. Different layers of rock/soil tell a roughly chronological tale of the past, barring cataclysm. There are enough undisturbed sites worldwide that a mosaic can be discerned. Good question.
plant and animal fossils are most often found in layers of sedimentary rocks
One example of relative dating is studying the layers of rock in a particular area. By analyzing the sequence of rock layers and the fossils within them, scientists can determine the relative ages of the rocks and the fossils they contain.
Relative dating by index fossils.

depending on how deep the rock is in the ground tells scientists how old the rock is
The dating of fossils was originally done by their placement in a geologic column of rock strata. Because of the Law of Superposition, the deeper the stratum, the older it is (in an undisturbed body of rock or sediment). Fossils which were evident in a particular stratum, but missing from other strata were noted as "index" fossils. The presence of these fossils indicated the age of the stratum relative to other layers. The layers of stratum were placed in a geologic column, subdivided, and assigned names based on the presence of different types of fossil organisms. This is the basis of "relative dating" of rock layers and fossils, a dating technique that was in effect until the advent of radiometric techniques in the twentieth century.

There are sedimentary rock layers and possibly carbonate fossils from sea creatures.
