The mascot is a bulldog. A bulldog was chosen because its low stature and ugly face represent the hard and often unpleasant work needed to achieve great scholarship, and the wrinkled faces that most Yale professors have because it takes so many years to reach that level of expertise.

Every time the bulldog dies, he is replaced by another one and given the name "handsome dan" to symbolize the transmission of scholarship from one generation to the next.
