Two other Commonwealth Games nations are India and Kenya.
The commonwealth countries - are a 'throwback' to the colonial days. Britain was a great sea-faring nation, keen on exploring. Newly discovered lands such as Australia, New Zealand etc., were claimed 'in the name of the King' - and subsequently became part of the British Empire. Although many of those early countries are now independent nations, some still retain membership of the Commonwealth.
There have been numerous name changes of countries within the Commonwealth, the member states that have ceased to be part of the British Commonwealth are: * Irish Free State (Ireland) - left in 1949 * Malaya - joined Malaysia in 1963 * Newfoundland - joined Canada in 1949 * Tanganyika - merged to become Tanzania in 1964 * Zimbabwe - left in 2003 All of these states competed in the commonwealth games prior to their dispersement, Zanzibar who merged with Tanganika also ceased to be a commonwealth member in 1964 however they have never competed in the commonwealth games. In addition Fiji are currently suspended from the British Commonwealth following their coup in 2006, they are currently down to compete in the 2010 games however this may change.
This is because the countries which compete in it are a part of the Commonwealth. The Commonwealth are countries which are or once where ruled by the English (England) and the queen. Then instead of having a President they have or had a Prime Minister because the queen is in control of the country and there is no need for someone else.It used to be called the British Empire Games but it gradually turned into the commonwealth games it had a few other names before the name of commonwealth games
