Denise is the French feminine form of the name Denis (often spelled Dennis in English). St. Denis was the bishop of Paris around 250 A.D. and is the patron saint of Paris and France. His name is derived from name of the Greek god Dionysius, the god of wine, drunkenness and revelling (the Roman equivalent was Bacchus).
