-mcclellandNorthern Irish: variant of McClellan, with excrescent -d due to the devoicing of palatalized -nin Gaelic.

-McClellanScottish and Irish: Anglicized form of Gaelic Mac Gille Fhaolain (Scottish) and Mac Giolla Fhaoláin (Irish) 'son of the servant of (Saint) Faolán' (see Whelan).

-WhelanIrish (southern provinces): reduced and altered Anglicized form of Gaelic Ó Faoláin 'descendant of Faolán', a personal name representing a diminutive of faol'wolf'. "Faolán" is 'little wolf'.

But yeah, "Son of the servant of St Faolán".
