The name Ankylosaurus means "fused lizard." This refers to the fact that many of the bones in the skeleton of Ankylosaurus were fused together in order to strengthen them enough to support the Ankylosaurus's heavy armor.

Ankylosaurs were bulky, four legged, plant eating dinosaurs covered in bony armor. The armor protected their heads, necks, backs, sides, and tail. Some even had a bony tail club. Because of the armor, they were difficult or impossible for predatory dinosaurs to hunt.

Ankylosaurus had four short, sturdy legs. Its belly was less than 3 feet above the ground, and the highest point on its back was less than 6 feet high. They were 25 to 30 feet long and weighed 6.5 tons. They had a strong tail with two round bony balls, one on each side of the end, making up what is called a tail club. The animal's tail, back, sides, neck, and head were covered in round, bony plates that protected it from the attack of predators.
