Lockjaw occurs and is followed by general rigidity of the body, then muscle spasms occur throughout the body. Finally, death is caused by interference with muscles required for breathing. ∙ 13y agoClostridium Tetani enters the body through a deep wound, this environment is perfect for the bacteria, as it is an anaerobic bacterium (thrives on places with little or no oxygen) and the bacteria is too deep in the wound to be exposed to any oxygen.
If not treated, C. Tetani can release toxins called "Tetanospasmin" which are released into the bloodstream and lymphatic system. This can cause severe muscle spasms, which can often cause bone fractures and torn tissue.
