The name "P38" is a slang term, and not an official name. The original P38 was the German 9mm Pistol (P) made in 1938 (38). The name was borrowed for the C-Ration opener. Still have mine on my dogtags!

This is the nickname of the military can opener P-38 that was used in both the K Rations and the C Rations from WWII to the 1980's. It is known as the "John Wayne" for it's dependability and toughness.
The little handy can opener, used to open C Rations was called a P-38. Some say it takes 38 'puctures' around one C-ration can to open it.
MOD P-38 are reported starting with Serial 24093 and ending with 25812. Approximately 1800 were produced and all were marked Crown over N. This designates they were manufactured for commercial sale and not military use.

although a P38 fires the same ammo as a Luger (9mm) it is not a Luger. It is a double action pistol that replaced the luger before wars end.......value of P38 can be checked by going to 'gunsamerica.com' and scroll or seek P38...................
