As each person is different there is no way to answer this in a general way. Some people say they experience no pain whatsoever, others say that it hurt a bit but it really only got bad when it swelled, and still others say that it was just an all around excruciating experience. It all depends on your pain tolerance in that particular area of your body. My best analogy is that it's like biting your tongue REALLY hard. Why bother finding out? Keep your tongue intact!

No actually there are no pain receptors in the center of the tongue, they are all along the outside edge of the tongue to remind you not to bite your tongue. We are just piercing the center connective tissue between the two muscle complexes that make up the tongue so it quick simple and for the most part painless. The discomfort comes the 2nd and 3rd days post piercing when the swelling can be a bit painful and annoying. If you follow the instructions provided to you by your professional body piercer you should do just fine.

Well now I have had it done, so I would say for anyone who wants to know, it didn't actually hurt at all, I psyc'd myself up so much and had heaps of adrenalin that it didn't hurt. Probably the same "pain" if any as a tongue piercing.

The sensation of pain is reduced by the client's mind set* (* do you want the piercing or don't you, if you want something it's much easier than when you have reservations about doing it ) and the skill of the piercer.

Why does your tongue swell every morning?
Your tongue swells because the piercing is still healing and when you sleep, your heart and tongue are on the same level. With your mouth open and snoring at night this tends to dry the tongue and the swelling occurs. The swelling will ease off over time as the piercing toughens up and heals further.
What if you take your tongue piercing out?
You probably shouldn't, especially if it is a newer piercing because it might close up, or you might have a hard time putting it back in agian.

Do tongue piercings hurt at first?
at first no, the clamp hurts more then the needle, but the next morning is awkward because you wake up and you feel like you have gum or something in your mouth that you can't spit out and your tongue is massive. I have mine done, eating is hard, because you are supposed to keep your tongue level so it doesn't bleed, but whatever. haha I like mine, so it is worth it i think! just take care of it and you'll have nothing to worry about :)
