The number of peroxisomes per cell can vary widely depending on the cell type and its metabolic activity, typically ranging from a few dozen to several hundred. In liver cells, for instance, there can be over 1,000 peroxisomes, whereas other cell types may have significantly fewer. Interestingly, peroxisomes also produce toxic material--hydrogen peroxide. However, they are well-evolved enough to quickly breakdown the hydrogen peroxide into oxygen and water, which is harmless to the cell.
