The power rating of light bulbs tells how much electric energy in watts the bulb consumes when burning.

As an aside, a rule of thumb for estimating how much you are paying to burn a light bulb for a year, the number of watts equals the number of dollars. So if you burn a 40 watt bulb for a year it costs about $40. If only at night cut that in half and say it costs $20. If you burn 5 of the bulbs all year it's $200

That means how much power the light bulb is consuming all the time when it's on.

Incandescent lightbulbs have one wattage rating, but the new CFL and LED lightbulbs have two wattage ratings:

  1. wattage - this is the actual power consumed
  2. equivalent wattage - this is the wattage that would be consumed by an incandescent lightbulb that produced the same amount of light

Watts are units of power. In simplified terms, power = voltage x current. So if a 120W light bulb is plugged into a 120V standard outlet, it will draw 1 Amp of current (120W = 120V x 1A).
