In the DS version the red wisp allows you to become enveloped in flames and hover in a way, provide power to balloons and can be used to launch Sonic from one of those strange yellow things on a wall which can be found mostly in Sweet Mountain Zone. Whilst the wisp's power is activated, all enemies touched are defeated instantly.

(30 rings will give you the option to use the mii characters on the wii) once you get all 21 levels and clear them, you can play as Super Sonic in the normal levels, but not on bosses. =3
