It is an integral part of the modern post-Vatican II> shortly before the communion the priest announces- ( let us offer to each other the sign of peace) this can take various forms, handshakes, kisses, etc. Not to be confused with the l20 degree phase angle- Peace Sign similar to the Mercedes Star. This was derived from the semaphore signals for N and D ( originally Nuclear Disarmament) and is not, by the way a cross.

Catholic AnswerThe pax, or sign of peace, which used to only be given by the celebrant to the ministers in the sanctuary, is now given by the people to each other. It symbolized the earthly peace between men which is the image and fruit of the peace of Christ, the messianic "Prince of Peace." (Isaiah 9:5) "He is our peace." (Ephesians 2:14) and he has declared: "Blessed are the peacemakers." (Matthew 5:9)

Is Protestant Catholic?

No.AnswerIf you mean 'catholic' with a small 'c', then yes. the word 'catholic' simply means 'universal' and so the Protestant Church is part of the universal Christian Church worldwide. If you mean 'Catholic' with a large 'C' - this usually refers to the Roman Catholic Church and, though the Protestant Church is part of the catholic (universal) church, it is not part of the Catholic (Roman Cattholic) church as this is a separate denomination.
