Although the story of the biblical Flood is simply one of several in the ancient Near East and quite close to the flood story in the Epic of Gilgamesh, The Bible places the story in its own context and gives it its own unique symbolism.

The story of Adam and Eve was the story of the first beginning. In the pre-Flood era, there was no universal law, and the inevitable result was chaos and debauchery. In this antediluvian period, man was vegetarian.

The story of Noah' Ark provided the chance of a second beginning. God tried a new approach and gave Noah instructions regarding laws for the good of society. God also told Noah that he could eat every living thing for meat, but that every living thing would live in fear of man.

ANSWER

Just as the Ark of Noah represented salvation because if you didn't get on that ark you were dead, so with the Ark of God: if you accept God's Salvation freely offered to all people you will live, but if you don't board that ark and accept Salvation you will die.
