A side effect is an an effect of an action, procedure, or medication which is not the intended effect. A side effect is often unintended, and usually unwanted. For example, you might encourage your children to play nice safe electronic games on computers or telephones. This might achieve the main goal of keeping them safe, but have the side effect of depriving them of physical exercise, leading to obesity and unfitness.
