The term pH, which is an abbreviation of "potential for Hydrogen" measures the relative concentrations of hydrogen ions (H+) and hydroxide ions (OH-). Because these ions combine to form water, they are always present in inverse proportions; an excess of one leads to a reduced amount of the other. It turns out that in an aqueous solution, the product of the concentrations of these two ions is 10-14. So if you have 10-7 moles per liter of H+ you will necessarily have 10-7 moles per liter of OH- as well (10-7 x 10-7 = 10-14), but if you have 10-3 moles per liter of H+ (which is a lot) you will then have only 10-11 moles per liter of OH-. And that gives you the pH; it is the exponent of hydrogen (but without the minus sign). A concentration of 10-3 moles per liter of hydrogen ions means a pH of 3.

Anything below the pH of 7 is an acid. Distilled water is at a pH of 7 and is considered the 'middle' of the pH chart. Anything above 7 or at 7 is a base.

What is meaning of PH value?

The pH value is a measure of the acidity or alkalinity of a solution. It ranges from 0 to 14, with 7 being neutral. Values below 7 indicate acidity, while values above 7 indicate alkalinity.

What does a high pH value indicate?

That the substance being tested for acidity is very alkaline.

Would a substance with pH value of 2 be very acidic or very basic?

A substance with a pH value of 2 would be considered very acidic, as pH values below 7 indicate acidity.

Does alkaline solutions have pH values below 7?

The higher the pH value the higher the Alkaline concentration.

What does a pH scale indicate the strength of?

The pH scale indicates the strength of acidity or alkalinity in a solution. A lower pH value signifies higher acidity, while a higher pH value indicates higher alkalinity. A pH of 7 is considered neutral.

How to check pH value using universal indicator?

To check pH value using universal indicator, you can add a few drops of the indicator to the solution you want to test. The color it turns will indicate the approximate pH of the solution based on the color chart provided with the indicator. Match the color of the solution to the chart to determine the pH value.

What pH valve measures acidity?

A pH value measures the acidity or alkalinity of a solution. pH values range from 0 to 14, with 7 being neutral, below 7 acidic, and above 7 alkaline. Low pH values indicate high acidity, while high pH values indicate high alkalinity.
