The colors of the flag simply come from the British Flag. The British Union Flag of 1707 was a combination of the St. George Flag of Britain (Red Cross on White Field) imposed over the St. Andrews Flag of Scotland (white "x" shaped cross on a field of Blue)

All the other stuff, Purity, innocence, etc are bunk made up in the 19th Century.
