Best Answer

apostle- disciple, one of jesus' followers

The name derives from the Greek verb apostolos apostello which simply means "send. "There is a good example of its use in the first sense in the following statement of Jesus:"A slave is not greater than his master, nor a messenger [Apostolos] greater than thatsent him." (John 13 : 16). In this sense, the term also applies to Jesus Christ, "the apostle and high priest whom we confess. " (Hebrews 3:1)

In fact, Jesus was sent by God to be his duly appointed.

However, this word refers primarily to the disciples that Jesus himself chose to form agroup of 12 representatives.

The word "apostle" in Greek "ἀπόστολος" [ä-po'-sto-los] the literal meaning is "a delegate, messenger, one sent forth with orders," and not in the same casual meaning used by many charlatans posing as "prophets or apostles" as in the Mormon church. When the Apostle John died around the year 100, he was the last human person to speak with the same authority as the Lord Jesus Christ! I'm sure someone would love to discuss this, but the gift of apostles mentioned in Ephesians 4:11 can only be referring to the 12 apostles of Christ. Now why do I say this? Because we read in Ephesians 2:20, "You are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets with Christ Jesus Himself the chief Cornerstone." After reading this passage, ask the obvious, have you seen any building with more than one foundation? It would be ridiculous, isn't it? Well, the next time someone knocks on your door and offers "prophets and apostles," you should know better and read the words of the Original Writer of the Word and not that of some misguided human being.
