The X in X men refers to the mutation that takes place in the X gene which gives mutants their special abilities! The X also coincidentally plays with the first alphabet of Professor Xavier, founder of the Xmen, and whose mutant name is Professor X! The Xmen try to resolve issues between human and mutant conflicts while at the same time protecting their true identities as the world isn't ready to accept mutants.
