The thyroid secretes two main thyroid hormones. One of these hormones is called 'T4' or 'thyroxine' and the other is called 'T3' or triiodothyronine. The gland secretes roughly 80% T4 and 20% T3. There are very tiny amounts of other thyroid hormones known as T2 and T1 but they don't appear to be clinically very important as the vast majority of hypothyroid patients do well on T4 supplementation alone and nearly all those who are still dissatisfied feel well again once T3 is added as well.
All of the T4 produced by the thyroid undergoes peripheral deiodination in the liver to become T3 as T3 is the metabolically active thyroid horome.
Lack of function of the thyroid gland leads to increased blood pressure, and since the hormones produced by the thyroid gland need iodine to be manufactured, iodine supplementation helps to reduce the blood pressure through providing enough iodine for the thyroid gland to secret sufficient amounts of T4 and T3 hormones.

Yes! a thyroid gland IS an endocrine gland
Thyroxine, or 3,5,3',5'-tetraiodothyronine - T4, a form of thyroid hormones is the major hormone secreted by the follicular cells of the thyroid gland.
The hormone that targets the thyroid gland and triggers the release of thyroid hormone is thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). It is produced by the pituitary gland in response to low levels of thyroid hormones in the blood. TSH binds to receptors on the thyroid gland, stimulating it to produce and release thyroid hormones.
Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) regulates thyroid function by stimulating the thyroid gland to produce thyroid hormones such as thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). High levels of TSH can indicate an underactive thyroid, while low levels can indicate an overactive thyroid.
A thyroid nodule is a lump in or on the thyroid gland. Any time a lump is discovered in thyroid tissue, the possibility for cancer needs to be considered. Fortunately, the vast majority of thyroid nodules tend to be benign.
